Christine Ryan-Else, a 66-year old retiree from Chesterfield in Derbyshire, won £3,116 on the free online lottery, Pick My Postcode!

Christine first joined Pick My Postcode in 2017, after seeing it featured on Martin Lewis, Money Saving Expert. And finally after years of checking daily and building her bonus through surveys, her postcode was picked on the Main draw, winning her an unbelievable £3,116, completely for free.
When asked how it felt to win, Christine said: “I am still in shock as I never thought it would be me. What a great surprise it was and it came the day after my 66th birthday. What a great present. I have now received my winnings and still cannot believe it.”
Christine also said “It means a lot to me, especially as it is such a big amount. I still cannot believe it.” This is her first win on Pick My Postcode. “I have always checked it everyday from the start of joining.” Speaking on building her large bonus over the years of checking she said, “some of the surveys are really good to do and others are a bit of a bind as they say they last for 15 mins and usually it takes much longer, but I have persevered and that is why I had a good bonus.”
When asked how she planned to spend the winnings, Christine said: “I did think maybe I could spend it on a small holiday but then I thought more practical and I may buy some new worktops for the kitchen, at least then everyday I look at them it will remind me of the win.”
She continued on to say: “I originally did think that it cannot be real, especially when the bonus mounts up. Even my husband didn’t believe it, every time I said I’m just doing a survey he would say you wont win anything. I did think they won’t pay out that much, but I am living proof that it can happen to you. Just keep on doing the surveys and mounting up the money and one day soon it could be your postcode.”
The site offers multiple opportunities for your postcode to be picked every single day. Pick My Postcode has 7,477 active members in Derbyshire and since 2011, the residents have won a total of £66,868.44.

Many congratulations to Christine on her huge win. It really is confirmation that it's worth persevering with the daily checks and building your bonus. As she says, some of the surveys are a bit of a bind, but a lot of them aren't. I don't do so many now because I don't have time, but they really are a good way to build your bonus, even if you only get the 5p - I once made nearly a pound in about 25 minutes just from being screened out of a bunch of surveys! I know it's not much, but it all builds up over time. My bonus is only about £560, but if I ever win again, I will be very happy to receive that nice little boost to my piggy bank.☺️

DDay June 6th 1944.
Brave souls rose with the breaking dawn.
To a future unforeseen.
Across the waves, with courage bold
They stormed the beach of every scene.
The dawn of fate, the day of might,
A plan so grand to take a stand.
Normandy’s shores where heroes fell,
And freedom’s story will forever remain.

Buttercup2, it's so sad that your dad could never speak of his experiences at Dunkirk, but not surprising, of course. I can't imagine how it felt when you read his obituary. It must have been hell on earth for the men trapped on that beach, and just the fact that your father survived, along with more than 300,000 of his compatriots, is a huge testament to those brave souls who took to the Channel in their small boats to save as many as they could. 🤗

My father was in a reserved occupation during the war so not involved in battle. His younger brother on the other hand seemed to have been everywhere. Dunkirk, D-Day landings and later Malaya. The two of them were like peas in a pod and often mistaken for each other.

I well remember my mum telling me about going down to the local US army base with her friend on the morning of the 6th after hearing planes flying over all night. They were both dating GIs from the 101st Airborne and were worried. When they arrived, they were brought inside the barracks and told they couldn't leave - the guards were very kind, giving them food and drink, but it was obvious they needed to keep them from saying anything until after they received confirmation that the invasion has been launched.
I have a photo of mum's boyfriend standing on a pile of rubble, on the back of which it says "Belgium, July 1944" so I know he survived the first month until at least Operation Market Garden. He'd given her his signet ring (which my eldest brother wears to this day), a set of duplicate dog tags with an extra tag saying "To Jeannie, my little timber queen" (she was in the Timber Corp, part of the Forestry Commission during the war), plus his uniform insignia patch, the famous Screaming Eagle, and a beautiful Spanish guitar, so he obviously cared for her, but he never came back, making me think he didn't survive - the 101st Airborne were amongst the first ones dropped into Normandy and lost so many men.
If you haven't seen it, I recommend the TV series Band of Brothers, produced by Tom Hanks and Stephen Spielberg.

Puppy Tails: usual round of chaos and disaster here - Storm seems to have learned that bouncing around in the sludgy top pond gets him a nice session in a warm shower with lots of warm dry towel-rubs after, and boy, is he milking it! Twice some days, one heavenly day when he forgot, and once on most other days. Shadow, however, hates the shower - not the water, just the shiny floor of the shower tray,, where he feels unsafe. I have to heave the front end into the bathroom, then push from behind until he reluctantly staggers in and stands there looking thoroughly miserable. Storm has to be pushed out from joining him. Yesterday I cleaned Storm, said Right, in your pen, while I was going to do Shad, and he galloped past me into the pen. I shut him in, went to launch an attack on Shadow, only to find him already in there waiting. I then noticed he was already damp all over - did a double take and found they had pulled a switch on me - Storm was back in the shower and Shadow happily sitting in the pen. Why did I end up with two identical black boys?
Last night we had Poppy to look after - she is the most manic, hyper lunatic, and if anyone knows where the batteries are stored in a Labrador puppy I would be very grateful to know! Poor Indi was mugged, chewed, licked, climbed on, the boys dived in to defend her and Poppy happily took them both on, growling, rolling over, chewing ears, necks, hurtling round and T-boning them, sending them rolling, then taking off with the pair trying to catch her. She is very light and fast, so can usually get away. It took a lot of changing-round in the evening to find what worked - I tried the boys in the pen, but Poppy still pestered Indi, swapped them round, but she looked so miserable I felt mean for not letting her have a bit of company for a change, and in the end I let Indi escape to her bed while the boys and I sat on my bed to watch TV. Poppy was thrilled, as she isn’t allowed on stepson’s bed, but I laid the law down pretty hard - No Fighting On The Bed Allowed! Eventually peace reigned for about an hour, although it did take a while to get three canine bodies to sort themselves out as to who was lying where and still leave room for me.
Storm has just thrown up. Oh joy. Excuse me for a while…

Especially On 3-4 hrs sleep every day.
I take them all out in the garden last thing at night - Storm and Indi reluctantly wandered out last night, Shadow made it just out of his bed, then fell asleep on the floor again. I heaved him up, and started him moving, he got another yard and collapsed again. Lifted him up, with much scolding, and he managed to get to the back door before curling up on the mat. Picked him up (won’t be doing that much longer!), carted him out into the rain, steered him over to the bushes and he reluctantly de-tanked before trotting back to his nice warm bed.
Following their health check on Wednesday (both doing great, teeth, skin etc fine, weight in the right range) I compared their weight with previous weigh-in at 12 weeks : Storm was 12.85kg, now 17.85; Shadow was 13.10, now 18.35kg. I think they are about 22weeks? 24 wks? Born 19th January. Both getting very heavy to lift, anyway. Poppy is much lighter - I think she was about 13.5kg last week? Not sure, as I wasn’t there, but it’s not surprising she is so much faster than the boys. Anyway, all doing well, not too fat, and not underweight thank goodness - can’t afford any extra food!

£2,783.75 donated in Simon's name, so far. So many people from this community have kindly donated. Thank you so much.
If you're wondering how I am, I am naturally very up & down and grief comes in waves. I have what I think is muscular pain across my chest and back. I think I have pulled muscles by sobbing so much. (I have spoken to both 111 and my GP and the upshot is I either go to A&E or wait for a routine GP appt. There are some moments I think I'll go to A&E, when the pain gets intense, but others I think I'll just wait when it's just an ache. Still considering what to do with that.)
It's my birthday tomorrow and I am dreading it. I'm going to a "craft and natter" support group this afternoon and an "art of relaxation" group tomorrow morning, both at Maggie's. I'll then have lunch with my parents-in-law to mark the day, rather than celebrate, and my cousin is coming after work to make sure I am not alone this weekend. (My mum's on her holiday of a lifetime which Simon didn't want her to cancel. I'm sure I'll have a video call with her.)
I am starting to discuss with Chris when I'll be coming back to work and it'll possibly be a couple of weeks after the funeral, when I have had time without tasks to do to let myself grieve. Maybe sometime in July. But I will be coming back. No way am I leaving this supporting team of colleagues or this community.
Hope you're all well and speak again soon.

Stress, grief, anxiety, relief, guilt, loneliness; all these emotions have an impact on your physical wellbeing. I'm sure your chest pain is related to the turmoil, you are going through at the moment.
As others have said, take things slowly, allow yourself time to remember good times and happy memories. Work and routine will help focus the mind, however hard that is to conceive at the moment, so just take it at whatever pace you want.

Nothing like a topical feature with reference to a country that hasn't existed for over thirty years (item 11.)
And was I the only person to be startled this morning (4th) while watching 'Breakfast' on BBC1 to hear a Head Teacher say that there should be less children in each class?
Gone are the days when a primary school child would be shamed for life for writing 'parvissimus' instead of 'minimus' in an examination paper. (I hope some of you get the reference!)

Love this sort of stuff.
There was an old sketch show called Absolutely where a regular character called Frrrank Hovis would deliver a speech while sitting on the toilet. (Or as he always pronounced it, the Rrravatrrry. He turned every R or L into an R, horribly rolled at the back of the throat.)
"So I went back to the barman, and I said "Barman, your Gents is out of order," he said "Frank, just use the Ladies."
Well I tried. But they wouldn't keep still."
(At that point, he reached for the toilet paper and realised it was all gone. Just before the sketch cut, he started removing his tie...)

Had a pleasant surprise today, think i have found a honest plumbing company. Got a local company come to give me a quote for a new gas combie boiler, as we have been having a few issues with ours, so i thought 15 years old must need changing. Engineer came to look at the job, took cover off and said, Worcester are one of the best and in his opinion wouldn't change it, just have afull strip down service and change a faulty pressure release valve. He said he obviously can't guarantee it but it's such a good boiler should get at least another 5 plus years out of it with regular service. That has made my day, the difference between a new boiler and an in depth service is around 2.5 thousand pounds. Don't tell Rachel she'll be knocking on my door for more of my money.

Is that an oil boiler or gas, Lol? My Trianco oil boiler went on for 35 years. Serviced every year, and I only replaced it because the heating engineer said that parts were getting a bit hard to get, and it wasn’t very efficient now.

When our Vaillant boiler (the one with the hare as a logo) came up for a 10 year service, Domestic and General said they wouldn't cover it any more and we'd get a 10% discount on a new one. But the engineer they sent out to quote for the new one with D&G's 10% discount - a well spoken young chap called Charles - took one look and said "with a full strip down service and regular light maintenance, you'll easily get another 15, maybe 20 years out of this. They're made to last."
So we've cancelled the expensive maintenance contact and just phone Charles directly now. He's really good and we're saving a fortune.

Yes, when you get a good tradesman they are golddust. My carpenter came out last year because I couldn’t lock my front door. It was new in 1979, so I thought a new lock would be needed. No, he said, I’ll just change the cylinder. Went to get it, fitted a new 5-lever kite-marked cylinder and charged me around £40 I think - labour, travelling, no separate call-out, collecting the lock… great guy.

Happens all the time, it's not just you. Don't take it personally.

Sometimes you will be screened out due to the answers that you gave on previous surveys where the external, third party company's system knows what demographic bracket you fit into from past answers and knows that you are not eligible for that survey. However, their system is not supposed to show you surveys which you are not eligible to complete but sadly their level of technology is not always at the level that we here at PMP or you our members would wish it to be. Sorry about that.
I do understand the frustration, but please don’t type in all capitals.

It just means that you don't fit the particular demographic they are looking for. Sometimes you'll be screened out of a survey because you do not meet the demographic requirements. These could be anything such as age range, gender, location, employment status, where you shop etc. Or it could be that the bracket that you fit in to has had enough responses. The external surveys like to have an even amount of answers from each and each bracket type does not get completed at the same rate.
Please don’t type in all capitals.

Is there a reason why you are shouting? Otherwise check out the Forum Guidelines ....
"Turn off the “CAPS LOCK”. Writing in ALL CAPS is the equivalent of SHOUTING and can cause offence. (The association with all capitals being shouting dates back as far as the 1800s, you can find out more by Googling this.) We request that Caps Lock be turned off to follow this etiquette. Though we do understand that some people with visual impairments find it easier to type and read in capitals, for most a text is easier to read in lower case. If you have to type in all capitals, please state why you need to do this in your post, to avoid any misunderstandings."

I'm not sure why you're getting so cross about being rejected from a survey? Whomever is paying for the survey, clearly only want people who meet certain criteria, in this case higher education , otherwise the answers are too generic.

A survey today wanted me to install userzoom on my browser...why? It then wanted access to my browsing history...why? I reported it to PMP!
Chris

Tips. Install a secure browser (i.e. not Microsoft of Google's offerings.) Run through a VPN. Disable cross-scripting - although a decent browser does this by default. Have a decent anti-virus package such as AVG - even the free version is quite good. And use an Internet Eraser to get rid of your browsing history. I use CCleaner and set the overwrites to the maximum of 35. Don't use a password manager - if anyone gains access to your machine, they can log into any of the sites you use and 'be you.'
You'll never defeat them totally (as Baldwin put it, 'The bomber will always get through') but at least try to deter them and send them elsewhere. Why break through a locked and bolted door when your neighbour has left theirs wide open?

There was a woman on a show a couple of week ago who had been in touch with a guy online, with the usual scam. She was asked about it and her reply was "I lost £80,000 out of that account." I can only assume maybe there were other accounts as well. I'm sorry but I have to say some people deserve it. I've had them contact me years ago and I know exactly where it's going and I'll play them as far as I can, but eventually they have to give up knowing I'm not a fool so they're wasting their time. Just today I had scammers on the phone trying to reduce our electric bills. The terrible thing is they knew the name, address, electric company and type of tariff we're on. That just shouldn't be the case. I wanted to play but when they have so much info it's harder as they'll put the phone down sooner.

Has anyone seen the AI-generated ad that purports to be Nigel Farage on Question Time having a blow-up with Andrew ?Bailey? from the Bank of England. Allegedly Farage tells of an AI media Investment platform and demonstrates amazing returns. The title is something like ‘The meeting they didn’t want you to see’ and supposedly Farage’s argument totally overcomes his opponent, who runs out of the studio. Although it is a typical ‘if it looks to good to be true, it probably is’ it does have some chance of persuading people who don’t check their research - saying that it only takes £250 to produce great returns within minutes, for instance, and the fact that such a confrontation would be in the papers or on TV. It also appeared on Monday, saying ‘last night’s ‘Question Time’ ‘ whereas QT is on a Thursday. Don’t get taken in, folks.

I'd seen the post van further down the road so clearly they were still delivering at that time. When will the Government realize that the people who buy our companies have little interest in running them, except into the ground and taking all the money they can out of them.

The pathologist did state that no action by the police would have saved the lad, as an artery had been severed - not excusing them, just saying. What infuriated me was that the killer was not handcuffed, even after the lad died.

You should watch the videos. They've been shown on the BBC. You have one person on the floor, stabbed and telling them he's been stabbed, and they reply "No, you haven't" or something like that. All they had to do was look, but the person who is on the floor complaining of being stabbed and can't get up is generally the victim. He was handcuffed AFTER telling them he'd been stabbed. Arrested is one thing, wrong admittedly, but handcuffing someone dying on the floor is another. He died at the scene, and I believe, in a very short time. It was later said "The killer lied to the police"
What? A killer lies to the police whilst his victim is lying on the floor dying? At least one of the officers should be charged with manslaughter.
samandi

I read that the killer told the police he had been attacked so they naturally arrested the accused person before realising he was injured.
If the police had ignored the assault report they would still be in the wrong so they are damned either way.

Police and Post Office were both responsible jobs where they wouldn't just let anyone join. Now the Police will arrest and handcuff dying men rather than be accused of racism by arresting a killer.

There was some idiot on TV who said people should be charged for wasting appointments - they have obviously not experienced the stupid system. Also, it was for an eye appointment - did it not occur to them that you might not be able to see! When I first started work the post office ran telecommunications, we had 2 mail deliveries per day and you could post letters to London on the Mail train (the British Rail Red Star and Yellow Star parcel services were also second-to-none). Also, they were proper jobs for people.

I think it’s a Universal Aquatak, and there is absolutely nothing when the power is turned on, no hum or anything. Fuse and socket checked, cooling-down checked (only running for 5 mins before it cut out, and have tried ita week later) , neighbour has checked it (mechanical genius) and tried working trigger to build pressure in the machine, but as there is no power 8n the machine, it won’t raise pressure. No reset on the plug itself.

Advice for Bosch.
Check fuse & socket is live. (✅)
Look for the small Test and Reset buttons directly on the plug itself. (Guess anyone would have found that).
If the motor overheats, unplig & let the motor cool down for at least 20–30 minutes before attempting to turn it back on. (You'd think they would be made water cooled).
Release Trapped Pressure: If the motor hums but won't start, turn the power switch off, disconnect from the mains, and squeeze the trigger on the spray gun to relieve any trapped air or water pressure in the system.
Could you tell us the specific model of your Bosch pressure washer (e.g., EasyAquatak, UniversalAquatak) and what the machine is doing (or not doing)? This will help determine if it's an electrical cut-out, a water blockage, or another common issue.
Beth8it!

I’m very unimpressed with Bosch at the moment. I filled in their contact form on 8th May to ask if there was a reset button anywhere on the pressure washer I had bought, as the electrics had suddenly cut out while in use. I had checked fuse (changed it), tried it in mains socket, tried extension lead with another appliance - a simple question that can be answered in 30 seconds. I got an immediate automated reply acknowledging receipt of my query and saying they would reply when they had considered my query. No further contact. Emailed them again yesterday, got another automated reply. This time I just put ‘I sent an enquiry to you on 8th May with no reply yet received. Is this the usual standard of Customer Services supplied by Bosch?’ Luckily my old Tack pressure washer came out of hibernation and is in use again, but the power is much less than- that’s why I replaced it. Got to have one to clean the pond filters.

Puppy Tails:
Not a great deal to report since our last check-in. Storm only went in the top pond once yesterday, and I was so fed up with cleaning up after him that I decided to stop making it so pleasant for him. Instead of a nice warm shower and warm towels, he had a garden hose and a horse’s water brush, followed by the cold towel. He did come and curl up in my lap afterwards, so didn’t suffer greatly, but whether it works or not, we shall see. He hasn’t been into it today , but we had so much rain this morning he was probably fed up with being wet, anyway.
Coming out of the woods just now after their walk, Storm had a real naughty session - horses grazing just outside, so I told him to wait so I could put his lead on. No, straight through the gate bars, hurtle round the horses, disappear from sight, race back, upset the horses, who trotted off, he followed straight across the gravel track with a big truck coming down it towards the garden nursery, came back, Shadow went off after him and they started rolling around under the trees, growling and play- fighting. I finally got them on leads, read the riot act, made them walk Close past the nursery, went back and walked it again, because Storm was pulling, went back and walked it again… eventually they both walked it properly. It’s a real pain having to re-do it like that, but if I don’t put the work in now, I end up with a dog that drags me around - can’t stand that, so unnecessary. I swear, whoever takes Storm on will have all the hard work done for them.

Sorry Beth (or is it Jane? 😶), it's a common southern mistake to think Hadrian's Wall is on the border of England and Scotland. Actually it bisects England. Virtually the whole of Northumberland (my home county hence my gritted teeth) is north of the wall. On the east coast the Scottish border is 63 miles north of Hadrian's Wall.
