How I gave away £1,000,000 for FREE
Like many of you, I grew up with the saying “money doesn’t grow on trees”. It’s an idiom that was drilled into my head at a young age after asking my parents for a what was probably an expensive gift for Christmas, like a new BMX bike or Super Nintendo System - yes, I am that old.

It’s the stubborn belief that getting free money is impossible. We all have it in us. While we’re slowly turning our heads around to free gifts – i.e. free samples, free trials, free-bies – the actual concept of winning money (i.e. pure cash) is too good to be true. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
Let me explain a bit more below…
Look, I’m just as suspicious as the next person when it I get anything for free, especially in this day and age. However, since 2011, I (along with a growing team around me) have given away over £1,000,000 to UK residents for free – without any gimmicks. It’s taken just over 3,000 days, which means we gave away around £333 each day on average.
So how does it work?
It’s easy: UK residents (aged over 18) simply sign up anonymously using their postcode (which we never share) and open a series of draws where they might just win a jackpot worth £1000s. Obviously, it hasn’t been a case of money actually growing on trees (that’s physically impossible) but it hasn’t been far off – we’re funded by advertisers.
While you might think that means people are spammed with emails and pop-ups, they’re not. Our members can find bargains and deals through advertisers (if they wish to see them) and win money for free – it’s really that simple.
How did it start and how did it get so big?!
Well, it all came to me way back in 2007 when I was riding my bike to work and I heard the term “postcode lottery” on a news report. I had just begun a career in web development so I set about creating one, but using online ads to pay for it, rather than selling tickets. After all, most stuff on the internet is free, right?
I started off giving away £10 per day and from there it grew. It became a virtuous circle. Advertisers came with offers and deals and the giveaways kept rising. When I started I joked about giving away “day-changing” amounts of money but, these days, we’re giving away jackpots that can actually make a real difference to people’s lives.
But why did you do it?
What I envisaged from that start was an online lottery that would give back to communities without asking for anything in return. It’s a UK-wide lottery where people, regardless of who they are or where they live, have the chance to win money without gambling, feeling deceived or being swindled.
It’s also helping people in small ways. In fact, a recent poll of over 165,000 of our 3.8million members revealed that 9.4% of gamblers who join the site have quit, cut-down, or avoided forms of paid gambling.
I’m not bragging (well, not much anyway). I just want to show you that there are no gimmicks. We’re not as big as some of the lottery draws out there and that’s because we’re not asking for your money. We’re not interested in charging our members and making money from gambling. Why would we?
