Happy 15th Birthday PMP!

PMP was launched 15 years ago, by coincidence, and hilarious misfortune, on April Fools’ Day. My sincere expectations were for it to be shut down after a few days, when I could no longer tolerate giving £10 away to strangers every day. We’ve since had ~3.5million signups, roughly 1 in 20 of the UK, given away £3.35 million, and been sued once.

We even have Superfans, like the omnipresent Chocolate Spaniel, and the very lovely and very orange Tango Doll (here she is telling us about her 2nd win), who sends us gifts every year. This year she made a very accurate PMP logo made of felt, and then hand delivered it to our office. She was in reception as I was leaving. She then made this impressive, though way too flattering, video about the whole experience:

It was so nice to meet her properly after all these years.

So how are things at PMP? To be honest, we’re mostly in the same place we were 10 years ago, which is around when we went from being my side hustle to a real business, with employees, and office plants. We have roughly the same number of people visiting daily (~200k), but make a lot less money from ads, but make that money back from the surveys on the Survey Draw. So, if you do want to support us, and you don’t regularly answer those surveys, please consider doing so. True, we used to give away more on the Main Draw, but we now give away more as Bonuses. We’ve had some very big Bonus wins over the last few years, which is both painful, and delightful at the same time, since we know those loyal members really deserve the extra cash.

So, why haven’t we grown. Well, first thing. In this world staying still itself is actually progress. Running a small business is already an uphill struggle, and it only seems to get tougher. The biggest issue though is that a free lottery just doesn’t fit neatly in a box that any of the big tech companies play nicely with. We want to advertise more on Google, but they say they need to see a gambling certificate, which is something we cannot and should not have because…. A free lottery is not gambling. Pretty much the same with Meta, and we’re even banned forever on Tiktok. For ever. They will not tell us why.

We’re often approached by big websites who want to promote us, only to find the Suits Department later say No, without explanation, and “will not correspond further on the matter.”

It sounds like I’m whingeing, and perhaps I am a bit, but I’m also proud. Proud that we’ve survived, have given away nearly £4 million as well as supported our team and their families. I’ll never stop being grateful for your daily visits, let alone birthday presents.

And here comes the Ask. Given all the above it really does help when you share your Referral Link. They can stop us advertising, but they can’t stop you posting (….yet….).

Back to the Tango Doll. In an earlier email she listed some ideas for getting the word out about PMP. They included, outdoor ads with a QR code for signing up (I like this… Will look into it) and a Road Show where I turn up in an area with the most picked postcodes (Not so keen on this one, as I don’t think anyone will recognise me).

One idea we’re considering at the moment is whether to run a paid draw, whether as a one-off or weekly event. We realise this doesn’t really fit the ethos, but given how the tech cos and suits think we’re gambling anyway, and the amount of people who write in suggesting it, is it time to give it a go? Imagine a £1 entry and a chance to win, say £10,000.. Would that work? We’re keen to hear your thoughts about this, and any other suggestions in the comments section below.

  • Woody update: the people who are going to have Woody, (our Postie, Mrs Postie and Postie jnr,) came today and were very happy with him. I was putting nice clean sheets in the pen, having tried in vain to sweep up the torn cardboard (four puppies hanging off the brush and a chewed dustpan later…) when they arrived, so I hurried out, and they all escaped too. The family were met by five excited dogs and a frazzled me, so we all decamped to the garden where the pups could let off steam. The young lad was a bit unsure at first - they do jump up if not told off very firmly, and they have sharp teeth and claws. When they started having play-fights he got very worried, until I explained they were developing their muscles by fights and acting like wild wolves would do, trying to see who could be strongest and pack leader. They decided to leave Woody here to have his second vaccination and wormer and pick him up afterwards, as they have a little bit more puppy-proofing to do, and supplies to get.

    I then got a text from someone who wanted a bitch puppy, but I hoped might be interested in Shadow or Storm as the bitches had gone. No luck, though - husband definitely wants a bitch, she said.

  • I think having an optional paid draw as an extra would be workable. That would leave 10 free draws and one paid for if wanted.

    Lots of sites have free and paid for options.

    Whether paid or unpaid, I guess the same percentage of members will decide not to read the thorough information pages as advised on joining. They’ll consequently miss draws through not knowing timings/locations etc and let their accounts become inactive.

    As for confusing this site with others, I expect that will always happen as so many people don’t pay enough attention when they’re searching on line? Hence the hundreds of thousands of people scammed every year.

  • Happy Birthday PMP. Well done on still plodding on where a LOT of companies have bitten the dust in recent years.

    I definitely would not go with a paid Draw, too many issues and would create more work and confusion.

    I have tried to refer people in the past but like others have said, the excuse is usually they are too busy or it is too much of a faff to check every day.

    I can see their point on some things:

    Having to log in at different times eg. the Stackpot as it is the first one to claim it, and the 6pm draw below the video draw (which I didn't find out about immediately).

    This could be trickier for shift workers too.

    I think the Bonus should reset to a smaller amount once claimed eg. anything over £5 reverts back to £5 perhaps?

    I didn't realise it stayed the same. And as the amounts are obviously bigger now after 15 years, and will continue to increase, it makes sense to change this.

    I think a LOT of people STILL get confused with this and the other Lottery Draw, and think they have to pay.

    Not got many suggestions on advertising it as I don't know what is and isn't permitted or the costs involved.

    Perhaps if any members are regulars or organisers of things like car boots, table top sales, antique fairs, toy fairs, WI groups etc. they could include something on their stalls to advertise it for you? (especially if you were able to provide any flyers, leaflets etc.)

    I do have one suggestion for the site but would prefer to message you about it instead as it is something I would set up if I had the know-how (copyright reasons?)

  • Why keep bonuses so high after a win? If the bonus was reduced to a level where you are still entitled to take part in every draw (currently £20 for the top bonus draw) then it would limit the ever increasing reserves you have to retain to cover large wins.

    Better than a paid draw surely?

    • I agree with Anonymous and PicklesTheKat! It takes dedication to build your bonus especially at the moment when surveys are thin on the ground and you get screened out for ‘issues’ with no chance of earning 5p!

    • If bonuses reset to zero, don’t you think that the majority of winners, having laboriously built up their bonuses wouldn’t bother coming back? There’d be little incentive to check twice daily for £5 or £10. I imagine a large exodus.

      The bonus not resetting was marketed as a big plus to keep checking twice daily, earning visit clicks for the site.

      The small number of repeat winners isn’t costing the site much more?

    • The way I see it is that if the bonus gets cancelled out after a win, no matter whether it be large or small, then we should, perhaps, be allowed to remove ALL of our previous survey replies so that members aren't automatically screened out for an answer they gave 12 years ago or whatever. Currently, we can edit, but not delete, I believe. Also, if you answer any questions at ALL you could be guaranteed to get 5p for your effort. (I know you can claim larger amounts from admin).

      The surveys are now so thin on the ground, or they're nonpayers, that members who have been here since the beginning, especially non-posters, will most likely not get any surveys at all and be inclined to leave if they have no chance of a 2nd big win. Is that not covered by insurance? Sorry, if I'm waffling, been up all night.

    • I agree. I was very surprised my bonus was not reset after my recent win. I am not complaining but your comment does make sense rather than a paid draw.

  • I am not in favour of a paid draw. I enjoy checking daily and have been for the last 11 years because it is free and I am not gambling or wasting money. I won £380.52 yesterday which was a lovely surprise. It was even better as it didn’t cost me a penny. Thank you Chris and all who work at PMP

  • I'm not keen on the paid draw idea,it could cause problems as others have said. Could you offer reduced advertising rates for , say , 3 months to small or new companies? Perhaps you could drop Win A Dinner - how many are claimed? Some days when I check not one has been claimed.

    I can't count the number of surveys I've started, got so far, and been unceremoniously dumped, because I no longer fit the criteria (whatever that might be).

    So I'll just carry on checking the postcodes. Thanks

    • If they all gave 5p that would be good but the ones that dump you for ’issues’, which is the majority of them, give you £0.00 every time!

    • I don't do surveys on here but they sound a lot like women. They unceremoniously dump you because you no longer fit the criteria. You never find out what the criteria is, and even if you did they'd change it. At least surveys give you 5p.

  • I don't think you should start a paid draw. People already think PMP is a scam, to which the answer is usually how can it be a scam when you're not paying anything? If there was a paid draw there would be all sorts of theories saying the people who paid had more chance of winning, or the other way round and the paid draw was subsidising the free draws.

    One point to remember about outdoor ads is get written permission to put up your ads, and dont flypost. You can be fined about £60 for each poster or sticker.

  • Congratulations for staying the course when there have been so many challenges in the world. I think you should concentrate more on advertising for smaller companies than enter the paid gambling world. I watch Sky and BBC News most of the day, but occasionally I switch to GB News. I have noticed they have some interesting advertising for companies I have never heard of (which makes a change from the funeral and insurance ads on the other channels). On resetting the bonus, don't think you should do this for smaller wins, but think about it for very large wins on the Main Draw. If you start having paid subscriptions you will have to employ a whole load of people to process and police it.

    • Congratulations on 15 years. This site is fantastic, I check every day and have won twice now. I am hoping for a third. I don't think going for the paid draws route is a good idea. Would it cost you more money to run, police and also to have the certificate? I think advertising the smaller businesses would be a good way to go. You and the team have done a brilliant job for all the years this site has been running. I will spread the word and my referral code more and hope it helps.

  • I see the great Donald Trump is moaning now about Britain not showing enough support of its ally's decision to wage war on Iran.

    Would it be churlish to ask where the USA was in 1982 when the Falkland Islands were invaded, or between 1939 and 1941 when Britain faced a very real threat of being invaded by Germany, or between 1914 and 1917 when British troops were fighting in France after it had been invaded by Germany?

    And would it be unsupportive to ask why successive Presidents of our great ally did absolutely nothing to prevent fund raising in the USA to support the IRA and other organisations that were waging war not only against the British Army but against civilians both in the Six Counties and here on the mainland?

    Or maybe I've got the wrong idea about the 'special relationship' and that, in truth, the USA doesn't give a flying fox about Britain so long as we are here to support it when it decides to launch a bombing raid against a girls' school and kill over a hundred children.

    • Barrie, it did take about 70 years, though - maybe not that extreme then, as £1,000 70 yrs ago would now be worth how much? (Don’t say £1!)

      I read this week that he was scornful about the size of our aircraft carriers. Perhaps time to remind him of the old saying, "It's not the size of the dog in the fight, ... " (You know the rest!)

    • Yes, it would be churlish. Be a churl - we need churls! Quite right, anyway. I actually heard him say a few months ago that they won the Second World War - yes, they were much needed, in producing liberty boats for the convoys to transport food etc to us, France, Russia and others; however, that was (eventually, I'll admit) repaid; they were only fighting after the Pearl Harbour strike by Japan, and that's where their main focus lay - Japan, Midway, and all points east. The did take part in the Normandy landings, when so many of their troops were slaughtered, and they also helped increase our population by many baby-GIs. On the whole, yes, they took part and were a great help; just as the Poles, Russians, West indies and other Colonial countries, were invaluable too. They did NOT win WWII

  • Happy birthday PMP i found you in 2017 whilst In hospital, so glad I did. I was lucky to first find a flash draw then I'm the December to win on the stackpot with a grand total of around £38 including bonus. I do the odd surveys but always answer the ones generated by pmp. You have been very successful to keep going for 15 years! With all the issues you have had. Like tango doll says a certain letter advert goes straight in the bin when it comes through the door! I hate bulles like they were/ are and paying all those celebrities to pay their message. At least you got the great Martin Lewis on your side. I'm not sure about a paid draw but the QR code is a good idea, I also don't want you to rile up those dreaded fiends again. The best way is usually word of mouth. Which i have explained to friends and families how pmp works, but some say is too much hassle to check throughout the day and they don't have time! So perhaps a change of time although they do have nearly 24 hours to check apart from the stackpot and mini draw. Lots of free draws have unfortunately gone down but you have continued to go from strength to strength. Here's to the next 15 years!
